I am always excited to work with curious, motivated people at the intersection of machine learning and the physical sciences. Below are some of the ways to join my group at NYU and the Flatiron Institute.
Emailing me. Please don't send a generic note written by an AI. I can tell, and it doesn't help either of us. A short, blunt email works far better: tell me plainly why you care about research at the intersection of machine learning and physics, what you've actually worked on, and what you'd want to dig into with me. PhD students
Physics PhD at New York University
If you'd like to do a PhD with me, apply to the NYU Department of Physics PhD program. I'd encourage you to name me (and the kind of research you're excited about) in your statement of purpose, and to email me so I know to look out for your application.
Deadline: typically December 30 (5 PM ET) for admission the following fall.
What you'll need: a statement of purpose (≤2 double-spaced pages), transcripts, and letters of recommendation. The GRE (general and subject) is optional.
Fellowships
These are independent fellowships that would bring you to the NYU area and let you interact closely with my group. I'm glad to support strong applications and to be your host or sponsor. A few routes:
Flatiron Research Fellowship (FRF)
Postdoctoral fellowships at the Center for Computational Astrophysics, with generous research support and a vibrant, collaborative environment. Applications typically open in September with a late-October deadline (around Oct 31), for starts the following fall.
Junior Fellow, Simons Society of Fellows
A three-year fellowship for early-career researchers hosted at an institution in New York City. Candidates are nominated (I can act as your host/mentor, though the nomination letter must come from someone else), so reach out early. Nominations are typically due in early–mid September. James Arthur Postdoctoral Fellowship
A prestigious NYU Physics fellowship offering substantial research independence. Applications generally include a CV, publication list, a research statement (≤3 pages), and three letters of recommendation, and are usually due in the fall for a September start. See the CCPP opportunities page.
Faculty Fellows, Center for Data Science
An independent-research postdoc at the boundary of computational methods and the sciences. Applications usually include a cover letter, CV, research statement, and at least two letters, with an autumn deadline. See the CDS Faculty Fellows page.
External & independent fellowships
I'm also happy to sponsor applications for independent fellowships that let you choose your host institution, for example the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (Einstein/Sagan/Hubble) and the NSF Astronomy & Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship. If you have another fellowship in mind, just ask.
